The VJO initiative seeks to avoid unnecessary criminalization of mental illness and extended incarceration among veterans. VJO works to ensure that eligible justice-involved veterans have timely access to VHA mental health and substance abuse services when clinically indicated and other VA services and benefits as appropriate. VJO specialists provide direct outreach, assessment, and case management for veterans in local courts and jails and help them navigate the justice system. Every VA Medical Center has at least one VJO specialist. '''Health Care for Reentry Veterans (HCRV) Program''' ''https://www.va.gov/homeless/reentry.asp'' HCRV specialists work with Veterans to ease their transition from prison back into the community. HCRV specialists meet with incarcerated veterans before they’re released and assist them in planning for reintegration into the community by accessing VA and community services as well as housing and employment opportunities. HCRV services include outreach and pre-release assessments services for veterans in prison, referrals and linkages to medical, mental health and social services, including employment services on release and short-term case management assistance on release.
