Before you use the system for the first time: Make sure that location services are on on your phone.

On an iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Location Services.
  4. Make sure the main Location Services toggle is turned on.
  5. Scroll down to find Camera in the app list.
  6. Tap on Camera and select While Using the App to allow the camera to access your location when you open the app.
  7. Ensure that Precise Location is also turned on for the most accurate location data.

On an Android Phone

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Location (or it might be under Security & location).
  3. Make sure the main Location toggle is switched to the on position.
  4. Tap on App permissions or App access to location.
  5. Find your Camera app in the list and tap on it.
  6. Select an option like Allow only while using the app or While using the app.
  7. You may also find a Save location toggle within the camera app's settings to save location data to your photos.


First time you use the system: Take a picture share it with email enter a subject that matches what you see and send it to incident@opencommons.org

On Android

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Take a picture of what you see.
  3. Tap the share icon (usually a stylized < with three dots or a set of connected dots) immediately after taking the photo or from your gallery.
  4. From the sharing options, select your email app (e.g., Gmail).
  5. A new email will open with the picture attached.
  6. In the "To" field, type incident@opencommons.org.
  7. In the "Subject" line, write a brief, descriptive subject that matches the image content (e.g., "Fallen tree on highway," "Broken street lamp," "Graffiti on bus stop").
  8. Tap the send icon (often a paper airplane).

On iPhone

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Take a picture of what you see.
  3. Tap the thumbnail of the picture in the bottom-left corner of the screen to open it.
  4. Tap the share icon (a square with an upward-pointing arrow).
  5. Scroll through the app icons and tap the Mail app.
  6. A new email draft will appear with the photo attached.
  7. In the "To" field, enter incident@opencommons.org.
  8. In the "Subject" field, type a concise and accurate description of the image content (e.g., "Fallen tree," "Broken street lamp," "Graffiti on bus stop").
  9. Tap the send icon (the paper airplane) in the top-right corner.


For subsequent uses: take the picture and share with the shortcut.

On Android

  1. Open the Camera app and take a picture.
  2. Tap the share icon.
  3. In the share menu that appears, look for a shortcut with the incident@opencommons.org email address, usually at the top or in the "Suggested" section. Tap it.
  4. A new email will open with the picture attached and the "To" field already filled in.
  5. Enter your descriptive subject.
  6. Tap the send icon.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Camera app and take a picture.
  2. Tap the share icon.
  3. Look at the top row of the share sheet, which shows your "Recents."
  4. If incident@opencommons.org appears here, simply tap it. This will create a new email draft with the picture attached and the "To" field populated.
  5. If it does not appear, you will need to:
  6. Tap the Mail app icon below the Recents row.
  7. Manually enter incident@opencommons.org in the "To" field (your phone may suggest it as you type).
  8. Enter your descriptive subject.
  9. Tap the send icon.
