For a person to receive services for developmental disabilities, an individual must be screened and accepted by their county of residence. If a client says they were on an Individual Education Program (IEP) in school, that’s a good way to figure out if someone has some sort of intellectual or developmental disability. This usually means they’ll be found eligible. Once enrolled, individuals are eligible for group homes, vocational rehabilitation, help with activities of daily living, social activities, and all sorts of other helpful resources. Application forms can be obtained from the county. Including reports with IQ scores and diagnoses is helpful. When filing a claim for disability benefits, the state office of Disability Determination Services (DDS) will make the medical eligibility determination, but an individual must first apply for benefits with SSA. Once a claim has been filed with SSA and is being evaluated for medical eligibility, contact the DDS at 1-800-452-2147 Once a referral is made, it generally takes a few months to get a decision.
