The VJO initiative seeks to avoid unnecessary criminalization of mental illness and extended incarceration among veterans. VJO works to ensure that eligible justice-involved veterans have timely access to VHA mental health and substance abuse services when clinically indicated and other VA services and benefits as appropriate. VJO aims to prevent homelessness by helping justice-involved veterans who have mental health or substance use issues access needed VA clinical services. VJO specialists provide direct outreach, assessment, and case management for veterans in local courts and jails and help them navigate the justice system. Every VA Medical Center has at least one VJO specialist.
